Profile: A Person of Asia
- Mr. Kuang Ting Chiu (Jack), Taipei City Fire Department –

The series "Profile: A person of Asia" feature administrative officers, who work actively every day in Asia, and international students, who are expected to play active roles in Asian cities in the future. This issue features Mr. Jack Chiu of Taipei City Fire Department

- Involved in life-saving mission as a firefighter and an international relation officer -

Hello, I am Jack. My major is Fire Science in Central Police University (CPU). Central Police University is the highest police education institution in Taiwan, besides the regular education, special training courses for fire officers were added. Because signing the service contract before entering school, so since graduated and passed the civil service exam, I was assigned to work as Taipei City fire station chief for 3 years. On that position for rescuing lives, it is dangerous and exhausted but meaningful. To successfully save citizens who may die in fire incidents makes me proud.
After fire station chief, I am promoted as an officer of information system division of Taipei EOC (Emergency Operation Center) and a contactor of Network for Crisis Management. On this position, I meet new friends and learn crisis management from other cities. Joining the team of ANMC21 broadens my international outlook as well.
I have been responsible for Network for Crisis Management since 2011. As a contactor of Taipei, I am in charge of Asian Crisis Management Conference, drill, training and Emergency Hotline. Among the activities, I help Taipei City USAR team to register the annual Tokyo comprehensive disaster management drill since 2011. Besides the drill, Emergency Hotline can gather all the disaster information from Asian members. Also, we can share experiences and information on crisis management because TMG secretariat sets a good information-exchanging platform for Asian Major Cities. Once receiving massage from hotline, I will inform my supervisor and prepare rescue resources if needed. I am glad to do the job of humanitarian aid as same as being a firefighter before.

- To deepen the relationship among cities through the Crisis Management Network -

The latest event I participate is the 12th Asian Crisis Management Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It’s my first time to join the conference and meet TMG work partners. At the end of the conference, we discuss a cooperation project and have fun to hold a meeting.
The challenge the Crisis Management Network faces is that the cooperation requires all members’ participation and support from the government. Without these requirements, it’s difficult to continue the cooperation project. In order to handle devastating incidents from climate change, Asian members should cooperate together in Disaster Mitigation, so I sincerely hope the project can be sustained by all the members and enhance the exchanges between us, such as every member could conduct a training course of emergency response, joint trainings, and Crisis Management Conference, and even civil servants exchanged.

- Taipei, a foodie city -

Delicious food is all I can mention for Taipei City. There are 40 centralized fields for vendors in Taipei. Among them, Shilin Night Market is the largest and most famous night market in the city and also my favorite. The famous foods are Fried chicken steak, Bubble tea, Oyster omelet and so on. It’s like small Taiwan so you can find any food you like. If members pay a visit to Taipei, I will give them a journey for food-lover.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s go to Taipei.
