Affirmative Investment Management (AIM) is a global asset management company specializing in impact bond investments. Amid growing interest in impact investing in Japan, AIM established Affirmative Investment Management Japan inc. in Dec 2020 as their regional base. They have started prior consultation with the FMEO in Jan 2021 and completed the registration of “Investment Advisory and Agency Business” in Apr 2021. AIM is committed to deliver mainstream bond market returns along with environmental and social impact to Japanese investors. Message to Foreign Companies Starting from the prior consultations, the FMEO provided a one-stop service that allowed us to submit the Summary of Registration Applicant and the registration application all in English. As there were no interpretation/translation from Japanese to English and vice versa required, we were able to communicate with our management team in the UK in real time and efficiently prepare for the registration application. While there were restrictions on activities placed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the FMEO provided prompt and flexible support, including the use of videoconferencing, and accepting submission of an Affidavit after the fact. As a result, we were able to complete the registration earlier than expected. Columbia Threadneedle has opened its Tokyo office in Feb 2021 in order to focus marketing efforts in Japan. It started communication with the FMEO for business licensing from Nov 2020 and completed the business registration for “Investment Advisory and Agency Business” in Aug 2021 and “Type II Financial Instruments Business” in Aug 2022. Message to Foreign Companies The English registration process, including the initial meeting with the FMEO was very smooth. Since all the written communication with the FMEO was also provided in English, this added greatly to effective information sharing with our global members.
