Report: Tokyo Workshop to Promote Resource Recycling in Bangkok

Tokyo, June 15th -19th 2015 — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) jointly held the “Tokyo Workshop on Promoting Resource Recycling in Bangkok.”
The Tokyo Workshop welcomed five members of the BMA Environmental Department, including those in charge of policy planning. Lectures and tours on the following three themes were conducted: 1. Tokyo’s current waste treatment stream— collection, transport and disposal; 2. Tokyo’s waste treatment plans; and 3. Facilities associated with the BMA Environmental Department’s activities. BMA has been recently making efforts to develop its new waste treatment system, establishing new waste management plans and building waste-to-energy facilities. Discussions at the workshop were focused on waste treatment plans and the policymaking process.
The workshop was conducted under a tight schedule, with two days of lectures and three days of tours. Nonetheless, the participants from BMA gave such positive remarks as follows: “Citizens’ involvement in Tokyo’s waste treatment council is a good model for promoting citizens’ participation in Bangkok.” “Since not all schools in Bangkok teach environmental studies, Tokyo’s impressive effort to start environmental studies from primary education is a good model.”
While visiting oversized waste station, the members of BMA repeatedly expressed their regrets to see usable furniture getting crushed. Their reaction left a strong impression on us, providing an objective viewpoint to something everyone took for granted.
BMA’s new waste treatment plan is to reduce the amount of waste by 20% between the years 2013 and 2032. To accomplish this goal, BMA is developing a new waste treatment system, including maintenance and improvement of facilities. We wish to keep on exchanging information between Bangkok and Tokyo, strengthening the intercity ties to resolve the mutual issues of the two cities!
