■ Overview
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) launched the BCA Green Mark Scheme in January 2005 to promote environmental awareness in the construction and real estate sectors. It is used as the yardstick to rate the environmental friendliness of a building ('green building'). It encourages the adoption of an integrated design approach incorporating passive design and various Green Building Technologies to achieve a sustainable built environment. A sum of $20 million was set aside on 'Green Mark Incentive Scheme (GMIS)' on 15 December 2006 for a period of 3 years or when the fund is fully committed (whichever is earlier). This is to help accelerate the adoption of environmentally-friendly green building technologies and building design practices. The enhanced scheme offers cash incentives to developers, building owners, project architects and M&E engineers who make efforts to achieve at least a BCA Green Mark Gold rating or higher in the design and construction of new buildings.

- This scheme offers up to $3 million in cash per project and is structured and disbursed in two stages to ensure that projects supported under this scheme are able to bring about actual improvement in building performance. The guaranteed energy savings along with other environmental friendly features would eventually benefit our building users and enhance our efforts in addressing the environmental challenges that come with Climate Change.
Under this scheme, the incentive payouts were also extended to key industry stakeholders such as the architects and M&E engineers who play a vital role in delivering these green buildings are also made available under this scheme. This is to encourage the professionals to find new, creative and cost-effective ways to make the buildings more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The fund is now fully committed for 102 building projects, with 62 Green Mark Gold projects, 14 Green Mark GoldPlus projects and 26 Green Mark Platinum projects.
