Umi-no-Mori (Sea Forest) ProjectTokyo
■ Overview
Concept plan for turning a section of the Inner Central Breakwater Reclamation Area (reclaimed land made of refuse and surplus soil), the veritable gateway of Tokyo Bay, into a healthy, green forest in order to transform Tokyo into a beautiful city surrounded by a passage of water and greenery.
With the slogan "Not for Us, But for Our Children," the roughly 88 hectares will be transformed and nurtured over a period of some 30 years.
■ Period of Implementation
- Reach near-completion by 2016 (plan to complete operations within 30 years of 2007)
■ Features
- (1) Create a wind passage into the city center: Create a forest to produce verdant winds.
- (2) A new, resource-recycling for forest creation: Lay the forest foundations with compost made from pruned branches and leaves from city parks and street trees, along with waste soil from construction works and recycled soil.
- (3) Nurture and protect the forest through the cooperation of citizens, businesses, and government: Forest creation and cultivation will be conducted through cooperation between citizens, businesses, and NPOs. Trees will be planted using seedlings cultivated by elementary school children in Tokyo and seedlings procured by funds raised through fundraising campaigns.
