■Description of birthplace Singapore
Singapore is a small, stable, developed country with an elected parliamentary system of government. Tourist facilities are modern and widely available. Singapore's strategic location on major sea lanes and its industrious population have given the country an economic importance in Southeast Asia disproportionate to its small size.

Q7 How would you like to utilize what you've learned and experienced at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) ?

Mr. Tan; The experience I have acquired during my research at TMU is immense. Besides working on my area of specialty, I have the chance to participate in numerous domestic and international conferences which enable me to have a wide network connection with many Japanese and international researchers. When I return to Singapore, I hope to build on this network for research collaboration.

Mr. Bui; I really appreciate skills and knowledge that I have learned and experienced at TMU. After graduation, I want to engage further in doing research and make more contributions to water sciences by taking research positions in world leading academic institutions so that I can utilize what I have learned at TMU.

Q8 What kind of role would you like to play between Tokyo and your home city?

Mr. Tan; I hope to be the research bridge between Tokyo and Singapore. As Singapore is also a major aerospace hub where many airplanes stop for repair and service, the research on composite materials is playing an important role as more and more modern aircraft structures are made of composite materials. I hope to enhance research collaboration in the field of composite materials between Tokyo and Singapore.

Mr. Bui; If possible, I would like to play a role as a bridge to strengthen the collaboration between Tokyo and Hanoi, particularly the collaboration in academic and research activities.

Q9 Please give a message to those who helped you during your stay.

Mr. Bui; Obviously, successful completion of my PhD is not my merit alone. This thesis would not have been possible without supports and inspirations from professors, colleagues, and friends during my doctoral study. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to them for their great supports.

Mr. Tan; I gratefully thank those people who have helped me during my stay in Japan. It is through them that I can adapt quickly to Japanese life and focus on my research study in TMU. I sincerely appreciate the warmth and friendliness of the professors, students and staff of TMU. They have made my experience in Tokyo both enriching and enjoyable. I hope the friendship acquired will last a life time.
Additionally, I would like to thank Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) for this exceptional scholarship for me to pursue a Doctoral degree in TMU. I gratefully appreciate its generous financial support from Asian Human Resources Fund under Project Asian Network of Major Cities 21 (ANMC 21). I also hope to thank many TMG staffs who have worked hard in this project to make it a success.

Q10 Please give a message of encouragement to future exchange students studying in Tokyo.

Mr. Tan; I hope future and current students treasure this opportunity to study in Tokyo. I am certain they will enjoy the beautiful city. But most importantly, do learn and adapt to the culture in Japan, and be a bridge between Tokyo and their respective home country, especially in terms of science, technology and research. This is the way Asia can grow together towards prosperity and success.

Mr. Bui; The program "Asia Human Resources Fund" sponsored by TMG is an excellent PhD program for Asian students who want to study at TMU. The outputs of program might be further enhanced by incorporating other activities for academic and research exchanges such as Fellowships for Professor and Lecturer exchanges, grants for joint research between TMU and Asian Universities.

A message from Prof. Naoyuki Watanabe to Mr. Tan

Mr. Tan has been an excellent, hardworking student. He has devoted himself in his research work and accomplished wonderful achievements, which rewarded him with a Ph.D. in three years.
Although he had the responsibility for his family he brought to Japan, He and his family adjusted themselves well and enjoyed their lives in Japan and its culture.
He is a person with a very clear view. He was firmly determined that he came to Japan to learn Japanese ways, and he lived up to his words. I am still impressed by his strong will.
I hope his experiences at TMU will help him find worldwide success in the field of composite material structure in his future.

A message from Prof. Akira Kawamura to Mr. Bui

Bui-kun, congratulations on your completion of hard work of three years.
You have made a great achievement in your research during these years in Japan, including submitting six papers to international journals (four of them have already been published), writing nine papers for international conferences, and giving four presentations at conferences in Japan. In addition to your research work, you have been actively involved in many events and activities in and outside the campus and successfully built an extended network of people. Your work at the international conference in Hanoi was also excellent and should be noted, from paying attention to details to organizing meetings with major organizations.
I wish you every success as a research fellow at the National University of Singapore and also your future career as a preeminent researcher in Vietnam, Asia, and worldwide.
