Strengthening International Competitiveness
―Tokyo Metropolitan University Opens an Overseas Office in Bangkok, Thailand!―

In April of this year, Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) established its Bangkok Office. It is located on the sixth floor of the Research Service Center of the Petroleum and Petrochemicals College, Chulalongkorn University, an institution with which TMU enjoys an academic exchange agreement. Chulalongkorn is Thailand's oldest and most prestigious comprehensive university, it actively participating in exchange activities with TMU through the conducting of joint research, etc.
Currently, the ASEAN Region is the focus of much attention as a center of global economic growth. By maintaining an office in Bangkok's city center, a major ASEAN metropolis, TMU is proactively promoting measures to strengthen its international competitiveness. Commencing with Thailand, such measures include cooperative education, joint research, and industry-academia collaborations with higher education institutions throughout the ASEAN Region, etc., as well as promotions that target students who possess an interest in studying in Japan, etc.

The Bangkok Office was opened on April 23rd this year, with President Fumio Harashima of TMU joining President Pirom Kamolratanakul of Chulalongkorn University in a cutting of ribbon at the opening ceremony.
At a nearby hotel venue afterwards, the presidents and representatives of both institutions held a reception and information exchange event. Here they were joined by representatives from the Information and Culture Section of the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok, representatives from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Thailand Office, and representatives from the overseas offices of more than 10 Japanese universities. Dr. Alisa Khunchornyakong, who completed her PhD at TMU, also attended this event as an Asian Human Resources Fund (AHRF) scholarship recipient. In her speech, she discussed her research on the air quality of Thailand at TMU. She also commented on her activities since returning to Thailand. Dr. Khunchornyakong's speech added a certain flourish to the proceedings.
At the TMU Bangkok Office, the future creation of information-exchange and interaction opportunities for TMU alumni who have returned to their countries like Dr. Khunchornyakong is being considered. Please look forward to the office's future activities!
