Asian Network of Major Cities 21 held “The 5th Asian Crisis Management Conference “
in Jakarta. Approximately 60 experts from 7 cities participated in the conference held under the theme of Damage Mitigation and Maintenance of Major Cities Primary Services During a Disaster, reflecting the high degree of interest on the part of each city. Reports from various organizations of Jakarta, which has faced devastating disasters such as the Indian Ocean earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, tsunamis and floods, were received with great interest by the delegates from the other cities. |

■Outcomes:
(1) The implementation and results of comprehensive disaster management drills and other measures taken against disasters were reported by each of the cities, and vigorous discussions were held for further improvement of their crisis management capabilities and enhancement of cooperation among the cities. (2) It was agreed that the cities would newly formulate a mid-term plan (FY2007 - FY2010) to outline the future direction of activities, and would strive to establish a framework of support in the event of a disaster through initiatives including enhancement of speed and efficiency in the system to communicate information and participation in disaster drills and training hosted by counterpart cities. (The TMG called for proactive participation in the Comprehensive Disaster Management Drills that it holds every year in September.) (3) It was agreed to hold the 6th Asian Crisis Management Conference in 2008 in Kuala Lumpur. |
